On this page you can search for irish words as head words (initial forms, non-inflected/non-conjugated lemmata) and inflected (grammatical) word forms. There are 150 000 head words and forms in this dictionary. For initial forms the corresponding word forms and grammar information (gender, declension type, transitivity for verbs) will be listed, and for word forms the corresponding initial form will be given.
All entries in this dictionary are of two types:
1) The base form and the corresponding word forms.
The base form is usually in the nominative case and singular for nouns and adjectives and non-inflected or non-conjugated form for other parts of speech.
Example:
ábhach1 : {m1}2 (gs, npl: ^aigh, gpl: ~)3
1. Base form
2. Grammatical information (in this example: part of speech, genus and declension type)
3. Word forms
The symbol ^ shows the beginning of the flexion. The symbol ~ replaces the base form part in word forms.
2) The word form and the corresponding base form.
A word form is an inflected form of a noun, adjective or preposition, or special form of a verb (so-called verbal noun or verbal adjective). Each entry of this type contains a special symbol ←, which means the form on the left is a grammatical form (flexion form, etc.) of the word to the right of this symbol.
Example:
ábhachta1 : gs2 ← ábhacht3 {f3}4
1. Word form
2. Grammatical information for the word form (grammatical categories)
3. Base form, from which the word form originates
4. Grammatical information (part of speech) of the base form (to distinguish between possible homographs)
